Most subscription trackers open with the same request: "Connect your bank account." It feels normal now — but it means handing a third party a live window into every transaction you make. Why these apps want your bank login

To auto-detect subscriptions, an app needs to read your transactions. It does this through an aggregator (services like Plaid or TrueLayer) that connects to your bank and streams your data to the app. Convenient — but you're granting ongoing access to your entire financial history, not just the recurring charges.

The trade-off you're actually making

• Scope. The app sees everything: where you shop, your income, your balances — not only subscriptions.
• Third parties. Your data passes through (and is stored by) the aggregator as well as the app.
• Breach surface. Every company holding your financial data is one more place it can leak.
• Monetisation. Some "free" finance apps make money from anonymised or aggregated transaction data. You're the product.

The privacy-first alternative

You don't need bank access to manage subscriptions well. The privacy-first approach is simple: you add each subscription — name, price, billing date — and the app keeps them organised, totals your spending, and reminds you before renewals. Nothing connects to your bank. Nothing leaves your device. No aggregator in the middle, no transaction history to leak.

The small cost is a few minutes of setup. The benefit is that the most sensitive data in your life — your finances — stays yours.

How to track subscriptions without bank access

1. Do one sweep to find what you pay for (Apple Settings → Subscriptions, statements, email).
2. Add each subscription to a tracker with its price and renewal date.
3. Let the app total your monthly and yearly spend and remind you before renewals.
4. Review quarterly and cancel what you don't use.
